Course description

Chemistry is the study of substances: what they are made of, how they interact and what role they play in living things and other processes. In fact, chemistry is it is the study of all materials and is vital to every aspect of your life. Chemistry is all around us, from the air we breathe to the food we eat and the clothes we wear.

Course content

The A-level course is designed to enable learners to:

  • Develop essential knowledge and understanding of the concepts of Chemistry and the skills needed for the use of these in new and changing situations;
  • Develop an understanding of the link between theory and experiment;
  • Sustain and develop your enjoyment of, and interest in, Chemistry;
  • recognise the value of Chemistry to society and how it may be used responsibly. The course includes modules covering: Development of practical skills, Foundations in chemistry, Periodic table & energy, Core organic chemistry, Physical chemistry and the transition elements, Organic chemistry and Analysis.

To study Chemisty, you need to be motivated, able to work hard and have an enquiring mind. You must have a passion for science and have a good grasp of Maths skills. There is a strong emphasis on academic skills but the course will appeal to those learners who enjoy practical laboratory work.

Entry requirements

At least 5 full GCSEs grades 9–4 (A*–C), including English Language and Maths, plus B/6 in Maths, A in Chemistry or grade 6 (grade B) in Chemistry, plus applicants must pass an entrance test. Alternatively, Core and Additional Science at AA or Core and Additional Science at B/6, plus applicants must pass an entrance test.


You will learn in a variety of ways, including lectures, independent study/research and practical work. Most lessons are planned to include a mix of tasks, which can include worksheets, card exercises and ILT resources where available. Videos and video clips are used to support learning where appropriate.

Chemistry opens the doors to a multitude of career pathways due to your ability to solve problems in a logical manner. Many accountants and businesses also like to employ chemists, due to their logical minds and analytical skills.

A knowledge of chemistry will give you a greater understanding of the world you live in, and could lead to exciting career opportunities. These careers could include medicine, chemical engineering, pharmacy, food chemistry, veterinary science, forensics and materials science. Also, chemists are making medicines that help in the fight against cancer and Aids; improving the way that new materials are used in roller blades and mountain bikes; and protecting the environment for future generations.
