Health and Social Care BTEC Level 3 at Gordano School

Course description

BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate offers a specialist qualification that focuses on particular aspects of employment within the Health and Social care sectors, as well as transferrable skills useful in higher education or other employment. The BTEC Level 3 Certificate (AS equivalent) will be completed in the first year of the course; you will study the Subsidiary Diploma at A2 level grades: P, M or D.
 

Course content

First year: Human Life Span Development

This unit will develop your knowledge and understanding of patterns of human growth and development. You will explore the key aspects of growth and development, and the experience of health and wellbeing. You will also learn about factors that can influence human growth, development and human health. Meeting individual care and support needs. In this unit you will learn about the values and principles of meeting care and support needs and look at some of the ethical issues that arise when personalising care. You will examine factors that can impact on the professionals who provide the care and support, and the challenges that must be overcome to allow access to good quality care and health services.

Second year
The course will consist of 2 units:

Working in health and social care
This unit will help you to understand what it is like to work in the health and social care sector. When working for an organisation in this sector, you will have important responsibilities that you need to understand and carry out. These include maintaining the safety of and safeguarding individuals with health and social care needs.

Supporting individuals with special needs
While working in health and social care, you may care for a full range of individuals who have additional needs. Individuals with these additional needs have a right to receive the best-quality, care and support. This unit aims to give you specialist knowledge that can be crucial to ensuring that those with additional needs meet their full potential.

Assessment

Your assessments comprise two exams and two coursework assignments. Good IT and written skills are essential.

Future opportunities

Progression to Higher Education degree courses in Health & Social care studies, Teaching, Nursing, Health Care, Social Work and Public services. As the BTEC
Extended Certificate is a nationally recognised vocationally specific qualification it will also allow access to enter employment in the health and social care sectors.
