Skills for Professions in Animal Care Level 1 Certificate at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College*
This course is designed for young people who have an interest in working with animals and who wish to progress onto L2 study in this field. Learners undertake animal handling duties at our SGS Filton campus and undertake work experience as a core component of the programme.
Units covered may consist of: Assist with the Care of Animals, Assist with Animal Accommodation, Maintain the Safety of Self and Others in the Workplace, Farm Livestock Husbandry and Equine Studies.
Entry Requirements for the programme are 2 GCSEs at grade 2 (grade E) in English and Maths, plus a BKSB Initial Assessment result of Entry Level 3 English and Entry Level 2 Maths (this assessment will take place during a college taster days)
Sessions will be a mixture of theory and practical lessons and wherever possible underpinning theory will also be demonstrated in a practical context. There will be a variety of assessment methods used (written assessments, observations, presentations and discussions being some) and learners will gain a thorough understanding of the evidence they are expected to produce.
All learners on the programme will be challenged to progress to one of our Level 2 Animal Management and Conservation courses, namely the BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Animal Care and the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care or Level 2 Animal Nursing Assistants course. To progress, learners must complete their level 1 programme with a minimum attendance figure of 90%, have an exemplary attitude towards their learning and meet all assessment deadlines, achieve pass criteria in all units and have achieved English and Maths Functional Skills qualifications to a minimum of Level 1.
Possible employment opportunities include working in the animal care industry, such as community farms, and pet stores.
