English Literature A level at Paget High School

Course description

A course for students interested in developing their desire to study English Literature. This qualification is linear. Linear means that students will sit all the exams at the end of their A-level course.

Course content

Paper 1: Literary Genres

Aspects of Tragedy or Aspects of Comedy.

Study of one Shakespeare play, a second drama text and one further drama text, of which one must be written pre-1900.

2 hour 30 minutes exam.

40% of A-Level.

Paper 2: Texts and Genre

Elements of Crime Writing or Elements of Political Writing.

Study of three texts: one post-2000 prose text, one poetry and one further text, one of which must be written pre-1900.

3 hours exam.

40% of A-Level.

Non-Exam Assessment: Theory and Independence

Study of two texts: one poetry and one prose text, informed by the Critical Anthology.

Two essays of 1250-1500 words, each responding to a different text and linking to a different aspect of the Critical Anthology.

20% A-Level.

Future opportunities

Students can pursue studies at degree level at university in a variety of subjects. English is a highly respected qualification and is useful if you intend a career in Law, Journalism, Teaching etc.
