Performing ARts BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate at West Lakes Academy

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Performing Arts course is equivalent to one A Level qualification. The course consists of four units:

Mandatory units

There are three mandatory units that learners must complete, one internal and two external.

  1. Investigating Practitioners’ Work (externally assessed)
  2. Developing Skills and Techniques for Live Performance (internally assessed)
  3. Group Performance Workshop (externally assessed)

Optional Unit Learners complete at least one optional unit, choosing the best grading towards the overall mark:

Dance Optional Units

  • Classical Ballet Technique
  • Tap Dance Technique
  • Jazz Dance Technique
  • Street Dance Technique
  • Contemporary Dance Technique.

Drama Optional Units

  • Acting Styles
  • Developing the Voice for Performance
  • Improvisation
  • Movement in Performance
  • Variety Performance
  • Interpreting Classical Text for Performance

Students who decide to opt for this course need to be aware that they will be expected to perform live at regular intervals throughout the course.

Entry requirements

At least 5 GCSE (or equivalent) passes, including 4 and above in English and maths. There is no requirement for students to have studied GCSE Performing Arts, but engagement in dance and drama activities, clubs and events would be preferred.

Assessment

You will be assessed through portfolio, performance and written examination by your teacher and external moderator/examiner. Your work will be both internally and externally moderated to verify your marks

Future opportunities

The BTEC in Performing Arts qualifies for UCAS points so if you complete it successfully you could move on to study for a degree or BTEC Higher National Diploma in Performing Arts. You could also go on to relevant employment, such as theatre work, or running/supporting local dance schools. In addition to the performing arts specific content, the qualification provides students with transferable knowledge, understanding and skills like communication and collaborative skills.
