Brickwork Level 1 Diploma at Isle of Wight College

Course description

The qualifications are aimed at people wishing to learn some skills in bricklaying, to progress on to becoming skilled in their chosen trade, or to progress through an apprenticeship and work towards becoming a master craftsman.

Another important feature of the Diploma’s is that it provides a progression route towards achieving a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at level 2. Units within a Diploma route relate to the units within the relevant construction NVQ. NVQ in Trowel Occupations Level 2 is for either new entrants to the industry or mature applicants working within the construction industry wishing to become trade qualified. An NVQ requires a candidate to be working in the industry to provide evidence to support its achievement.

Course content

Level 1 allows candidates to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in Bricklaying.

It covers the following skills

  • Carry out Bricklaying activities
  • Carry out Cavity walling activities
  • Contribute to setting out and building masonry structures up to damp proof course

Knowledge will then be assessed by means of two online exams:

  • Level 1 Principles of Building Construction, information & communication
  • Level 2 Health, safety and welfare in construction

Entry requirements

The qualification is accessible to everyone who wishes to continue their personal development in English and Maths and has a record of continual self achievement. We are looking for a positive attitude and a willingness to work hard towards self improvement in these areas. (Employers in the construction industry are expressing the need for higher levels of literacy and numeracy skills).


To gain the award candidates have to be successful in all units and the phase test but each unit they achieve will be recorded. They must also pass a separate knowledge test.

The course is structured and delivered by continuous assessment but includes phase testing of practical ability and knowledge areas in each unit It will be your responsibility to update your record book which will show evidence of your experience and achievements. Successful assessment will result in a credit being awarded providing payment has been made for each one. The Certificate is awarded on completion of all units and achievement of the health and safety test.

Materials, Books and Equipment required

You will be expected to provide yourself with:

  • Overalls and safety footwear (£40 approx.)
