Digital Film Making AS and A Level at Portsmouth College

Course description

This course is for students interested in the technicalities and creative possibilities of film and video.  You will use industry standard software - and your own imagination and ingenuity - in projects to create films from scratch.

Course content

You will develop knowledge and understanding in the following areas:

  • Storyboards, camera techniques, composition, editing, cropping and pacing
  • The function and quality of lighting in location work
  • Use of sound and its interaction with moving images and text
  • The work of others as a means of extending your film and video vocabulary

Entry requirements

You would normally be expected to have at least five GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English Language), some at grade B or above. Level 2 BTEC or OCR National qualifications (at Merit grade or higher) would be a useful addition but cannot be used instead of the basic GCSE requirement.

Assessment

The course is assessed through coursework and practical projects, many of which also involve a significant proportion of written work.

Future opportunities

We encourage our students to enter regional and national competitions for young film makers, where their highly original and creative work has enjoyed considerable, award-winning success*.

You will also make a number of other cinema visits and we will link up with the University to explore the technology and challenges on offer at the next level of study.
