A Level Mathematics at Grindon Hall Christian School - GHCS
This course will help students to: develop their understanding of mathematics and mathematical processes; extend their range of mathematical skills and techniques and use them in more difficult, unstructured problems; develop their abilities to reason logically and develop an understanding of coherence and progression in mathematics.
Students will study three units in each year of the two year course. Four of these are pure mathematics and two will be applied mathematics.
Year 12 – Core 1, Core 2 and one of Mechanics 1, Statistics 1 or Decision 1
Year 13 – Core 3, Core 4 and another one of Mechanics 1, Statistics 1 or Decision 1
Minimum entry requirements are in line with the School’s admission policy, but at least a grade A in GCSE Maths is recommended.
Assessment takes place at the end of each year over the two year course. You will sit three exams in the summer exam season. Each paper is worth 75 marks and is 1 hour 30 minutes in length.
Higher Education Opportunities
A natural progression to a Mathematics degree will lead on to many job prospects but taking an A-level in Mathematics will also provide a good foundation for degrees in Engineering, Economics, Business and Science.
Problem-solving skills, thinking logically and quantitatively, analysing information and strong numeracy skills will always be highly valued by employers. Possible future careers include Actuarial work, Economic and Statistical Analysis, Scientific Research and Development, Secondary School Teaching, Chartered Accountancy, Retail Banking, Insurance and Pensions, Information Technology and Management.
