Further Mathematics A Level at Harris City Academy Crystal Palace

Course description

AS – Year 12: Consists of studying 3 modules over 1 year.

A2 – Year 13: Consists of studying 6 modules over 2 years.

Further AS – Consists of an additional 3 modules making a total of 9 over 2 years.

Further Mathematics – consists of studying an additional 3 modules making a total of 12

Topics studied within AS/A2 and Further Mathematics:

In Core Mathematics students will extend their knowledge of GCSE topics such as Algebra and Trigonometry as well as learning new topics such as Calculus.

In Mechanics students will learn how to describe mathematically the motion of objects and how they respond to forces acting upon them.

In Statistics students will learn a range of methods aimed at sampling, representing and interpreting sets of data. Students will also study Probability and Hypothesis Testing.

In Decision Mathematics students will learn how to solve a range of problems involving networks. A range of Algorithms will enable such problems to be solved.

Further Mathematics is only for students who have achieved an A* at GCSE.

If students intend studying AS Physics in Year 12 they should choose Mechanics 1.

Entry requirements

Students require a grade B or above in Mathematics GCSE, to take Mathematics AS Level. Students with a B in GCSE Mathematics will need to pass an Algebra test in order to take the AS qualification. There will be an opportunity to sit the Algebra test on the taster day (July) and another one on induction day (September). Students who achieve an A or above in GCSE Mathematics will not need to sit the Algebra test. An A* grade is required to take Further Mathematics. Successful completion of AS Mathematics / Further Mathematics with a grade D or above is necessary to carry on to Year 13 Mathematics / Further Mathematics.

Assessment

All of the units are examined by 1 hour 30 minute examination papers during the Summer Examination period.

Throughout the academic year students are formally assessed 6 times. These ALIS Assessment Tasks will be based on mock and actual examination questions.

Future opportunities

A Level Mathematics is a much sought after and highly respected qualification, which can open doors to a wide range of Higher Education courses and rewarding careers. Higher Education courses that require A Level Mathematics include Economics, Teaching, Medicine, Psychology, Architecture, Science and Accountancy.

For those students wishing to pursue degree course in Mathematics, A level Further Mathematics may be a requirement. Those interested in Engineering, will also find this a suitable course.
