Music (Performance) BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma at Heysham High School Sports College

Course description

The course consists of three units to be completed in Year 12 from which you can be awarded the certificate qualification. If you continue to study the course in Year 13, completing six units in total, you will be awarded Subsidiary Diploma.

The course covers a wide range of music techniques, from units which are selected to suit the learner’s needs. Some of the units studied in the past have included.

  • Solo Music Performance Skills.
  • Pop Music in Practice.
  • Specialist Subject Investigation.
  • The Sound and Music Industry.
  • Marketing and Promotion in the Music Industry.

Entry requirements

Students must be able to sing or play an instrument to a competent standard, and should have achieved a grade C in English. Although desirable, it is not essential to have studied music at Key Stage 4.


The course is 100% coursework based, with evidence being collated through essays, research, practical work and recorded evidence.

All resources for the course are provided. Access to a computer and the internet is essential.

Future opportunities

The course provides a route into further education in music. Past pupils have gone on to study at universities, music colleges and conservatoires. The qualification also gives you the opportunity to gain employment in the music industry.
