Laboratory Skills - Human Sciences Cambridge Technical Level 3 Diploma at Northallerton School & Sixth Form College

Course description

The technical diploma course will allow students to apply their skills, knowledge and understanding to tasks or activities that are relevant to how human sciences are used in the workplace. Having an appreciation of how these are used in work will also help to prepare them for continuing their education in this sector. On completion of the course students will obtain a Level 3 National Diploma equivalent to 2 A levels. 

Course content

This qualification will give students the scientific principles and practical techniques to carry out experiments safely and accurately. Students will have the opportunity to collect, analyse, evaluate and present primary data. They will also evaluate the analytical techniques to improve the quality and collection of data. Students become more confident in many areas including team working, independent enquiry and time management .


Students study the 3 examined Units and 2 coursework Units

Unit 1: Science Fundamentals (examined) Unit 2: Laboratory (examined) Unit 3: Scientific analysis and reporting (examined) Unit 4. Human Physiology Unit 8: Cell Biology (Learners can re-sit an examined unit once before they complete the qualification).


Students study 5 coursework Units

Unit 5: Genetics Unit 6: Control of Hazards in the Laboratory Unit 7. Human Nutrition Unit 10: Testing Consumer Products Unit 18: Microbiology



Entry requirements

GCSE grade BC or above in double award science and fout other GCSE'S at C or above (including grade 4 in English and grade 5 in mathematics)



Assessment is by coursework and three examined units.

Future opportunities

The Level 3 Diploma in Laboratory skills offers the opportunity to enter higher education in many scientific fields e.g. health care, forensics, teaching and sports science. Since the course enhances and develops practical and study skills, this will better prepare them to progress to higher education or employment in areas related to human science.
