Sociology AS/A2 at West Coventry 6th Form (Woodlands Academy, Tile Hill Wood School, Westwood Academy)
Sociology is all about human behaviour; it looks at how society works and how the various parts of society relate to each other. Core features of the course include the different views sociologists have about the subject, the disagreements surrounding the nature of society and the various ways researchers learn about the social world. Studying Sociology to AS and/or A Level will help you to gain the essential knowledge and understanding of central aspects of sociological thought and methods.
You will consider the integration of sociological themes: • Socialisation, culture and identity • Social differentiation, power and stratification. At AS Level you will learn about; • Unit 1: Families and Households • Unit 2: Education and Research Methods At A2 Level you will learn about; • Unit 3: Beliefs and Research Methods. • Unit 4: Crime and Deviance
• 5 GCSE’s or equivalent grade C or above. • Minimum grade C but preferably B in English Language.
Year 12: 100% of the course is assessed through 2 external exams at the end of year 12. Year 13: 100% of the course is assessed through 2 external exams at the end of year 12.
This course lays an appropriate foundation for further study of sociology and related subjects in higher education. Material studied would be useful for candidates intending to pursue careers in the field of Social Sciences including: law, police, media, journalism, nursing, social work, probation services, research and the civil service. The valuable knowledge and transferable skills would also be useful in the world of business and commerce.
A range of methods will be used throughout the duration of the course. Opportunities will exist for independent research, group work, teacher led activities, discussions and debates. To demonstrate understanding you will analyse, evaluate and form constructive criticisms for various sociological theories and perspectives. You will develop the ability to communicate articulate arguments in written and verbal form.
