Apprenticeship - Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care at County Training - Shropshire Council

Course description

This course is for those looking to develop a career in health and social care. This is a rewarding sector, with a range of exciting and challenging environments available to work in.

Job roles are varied and may include working with individuals who have a particular need such as the disabled, elderly, or people with learning disabilities. Settings for this kind of work could include a care home, domiciliary care in the service user’s home, a hospital or a day care centre. Essential personal qualities required to work in care include, excellent people skills, with the ability to communicate with a range of individuals, a professional attitude with a good understanding of confidentiality whilst possessing a caring and pleasant nature.

This is a work-based qualification, so you will be learning through on-the-job practical training, providing you with the relevant skills and experience in order to continually progress your career.

Course content

Health and Social Care Intermediate Apprenticeship

You will work towards a framework of qualifications which will include:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care
  • Level 2 Technical Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT
  • Level 2 Award in Employment Rights and Responsibilities in Health and Social Care Settings
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

Entry requirements

Before you can start this course, you will need to have a relevant paid work placement of at least 30 hours per week. There may be existing placements available or County Training can provide you with support to find a placement. This may be through an interview, some support with writing applications or preparing a CV, or even through work-experience placements.

Assessment

Before your course starts you will meet with your manager at work and your assessor to discuss which units of the qualification you will be working towards. These will be based on the kind of job role and day-to-day tasks you will be doing. Your assessor will then visit you on a regular basis to help collect evidence of the skills and knowledge you are gaining through one-to-one discussions, observations at work and witness testimonies from your manager – all of these activities will help you to build a portfolio demonstrating your ability for this area of work.

In addition, there will be a requirement for you to attend 10 fortnightly workshops to gain theoretical knowledge.

Financial information

The cost will be dependent on individual circumstances. There may be funding available to cover training costs.

For 16-18 year olds undertaking an Apprenticeship, training will be fully funded. A contribution of £250/£350 may be required for individuals aged 19 and over depending on existing qualifications held.

Future opportunities

There are lots of opportunities to continue training and progressing in health and social care. Moving onto the Advanced Apprenticeship can offer many different careers, including those as a senior healthcare assistant, senior carer, a supervisor, family support worker, community development worker or a personal assistant. Many Apprentices completing the Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeships go on to be care managers or complete degrees in nursing or midwifery.

If you're already working in a Health and Social Care role, it is likely you will naturally possess many of the personal qualities that are suited to this sector.

Candidates are usually required to have excellent people skills, with a friendly, caring and pleasant nature. Individuals need to have a genuine desire to help people with an understanding of the importance of respecting others. Both team working whilst having the ability to work using own initative are essential qualities, as is being patient and able to remain calm under pressure.
