Course description

An Academic Pathway Subject:

This AQA A Level in Spanish is linear so students sit their public examinations at the end of the two years of study. The AQA specification has far greater emphasis on Spanish culture and society than previously.

Cultural heritage or cultural landscape

AQA provide a set list of literary texts and films for study and examination in the Paper 2 in the below assessment section. At Newlands they plan to study the novel “Como agua para chocolate” and the film “Volver”.

Entry requirements

An average of 5- 'Attainment 8' score (largely equivalent to 4 grade 4s and 4 grade 5s) across 8 highest GCSEs including English & Maths

At least a grade 5 in GCSE Spanish

Assessment

A-level:

Paper 1: Listening and responding, Reading and responding & Writing, (translation into English and MFL) – 50% of A level (2 hours 30 minutes)

Paper 2: Written exam – 20% of A Level (2 hours) – of one text and one film or two texts from the list set in the specification, plus grammar.  Either one question in Spanish on a set text from a choice of two questions and one question in Spanish on a set film from a choice of two questions or two questions in Spanish on set texts from a choice of two questions on each text.

Paper 3: Speaking – 30% of A Level (21-23 minutes including 5 minutes prep time)

 

Future opportunities

Business, Law, Education and the Media are common career choices for students with higher qualifications in languages.
