Business Studies Edexcel A Level at Lea Valley High School

Course description

This course provides students with a broad but detailed knowledge into the world of Business. It provides valuable insight, and understanding, in to what, where and why events happen in the business world, and how individuals and companies will be affected. The course links strongly into other subject areas such as Geography, History and Economics enhancing a student's wider knowledge base. The course is equally beneficial for students seeking entry into higher education, or for those wishing to build a knowledge base for starting their own business in the future.

Course content

In Year 1 you will study two main themes these being marketing and people followed by managing business activities. You will discover how actions impact on the potential success, or failure, of a business.

In Year 2 you will revisit your prior teaching in Year 1 which will be supplemented with two new themes, namely business decisions and strategy, and global business. A key feature of your A2 year focusses on how business interrelates with the world and who the key players are.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE A* - C including Mathematics and English Language at grade B or better


This course is assessed by three written examinations:

Paper 1 — Marketing, people and global businesses. This is a two-hour written examination worth 35% of the final grade.

Paper 2 — Business activities, decisions and strategy. This is also a two-hour written examination worth 35% of the final grade.

Paper 3 — Investigating business in a competitive environment. Again, this is a two-hour examination but worth 30% of the final grade. This examination is based on pre-released material which the student receives prior to the exam.

Future opportunities

Students of Business Studies can go on to study higher level courses, including foundation and undergraduate degrees in a wide range of subjects, not just in Business Studies. Most jobs can be linked to Economics and Business. Careers in the following industries can be sought following this course: finance and banking, law, marketing, human resources and operations management.
