Classics A2 OCR at Sandown Bay Academy
The A level builds on the course content of the Classical Civilisation GCSE, but it is not necessary to have this qualification before undertaking the A level. A2 Units (equally weighted): 3.Art and Architecture in the Greek World •Sculpture, temple architecture, vase paintings 4.Virgil and the world of the hero •Virgil’s poem ‘The Aeneid’ •Virgil’s relationship to the regime of Augustus •Political and historical background in which the Aeneid was written EXTRA FEATURES: Archaeological field trip to Greece and the Islands, Hadrian’s Wall, British museum, other Romano-British sites and weekend lecture courses.
Relevant AS qualification
POSSIBLE PROGRESSION: Classical Civilisation is a rigorous, analytical, text and aesthetically based and subject specific course which will allow possible progression into Classical, Ancient Historical, Archaeological, and other Historical/Textual based courses. SUGGESTED COMBINATIONS: Classical Civilisation works extremely well with: Ancient History, Philosophy, Modern History, Sociology, Politics, English and Art (good for scientists looking for an arts course to practise essay and debating skills). You could take this course with other advanced level courses or equivalent to prepare for higher education in History or related subjects such as English, American Studies, Politics, Archaeology or more general courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to classical civilisation by seeking employment in areas of heritage such as working for a museum or working as a History Teacher. The course will also help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
