Travel and Tourism - Level 3 Extended Diploma (Edexcel) at Blackpool and The Fylde College

Course description

The course is an alternative to studying a traditional A level programme, the BTEC Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism is equivilent to 3 A Levels and it allows students to cover a wide range of areas that make up the huge industry from hotels, entertainment, marketing and event management to transport, customer services, visitor attractions and tour operations. The programme of study aims to provide you with specialist knowledge, understanding and skills needed for entering a career in the industry or for continuing your studies at university. The course carries UCAS points and is seen as a main route into most Higher Education institutions. This is a broad based course that covers many elements of the industry so learners can choose their chosen areas of expertise.

Year 2

  • The Business of Travel and Tourism

  • Preparing for Employment in Travel and Tourism
  • Passenger Transport
  • Children's Representatives
  • Hospitality Operations
  • Events, Exhibitions and Conferences
  • Work Experiences
  • Tour Operations

As part of the programme of study you will undertake additional qualifications that will enhance employment opportunities as well as prepare you for current and future studies, these include:

  • Developmental English and/ or mathematics (depending on entry grade and initial assessment outcomes)
  • Functional Skills in English and/or mathematics
  • Tutorial and Enrichment Programmes
  • Additional industry recognised qualifications such as Welcome Host and NCFE Passenger Shipping and Cruise Operations
  • Work Experiences

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade C or above including English Language and Maths or a First Diploma at merit plus 2 GCSEs in English and Maths at grade C or above

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the course, it is expected that you will progress into supervisory or advanced positions within the industry in roles such as:

  • Resort Reps, Cabin Crew, Travel Agents, Reservations, Children’s Reps, Tourism Promotion, Marketing, Tourism Development, Training, Tourist Attractions, Legal Team, Brochure Production, Customer Service, Event Management, Airport Ground Staff, Tourist Information

  • You could also go into Higher Education to study courses such as a degree in Tourism Studies, Event Management or a related subject, all of these are offered at Blackpool and the Fylde College University Centre through Salford University.
