Entry requirements

As well as a love of science and an inquisitive mind students will require at least a B grade in Science GCSE Core with additional B grade in Maths and C grade in English.

Assessment

In AS Chemistry the assessment consists of two written exam papers at the end of year 12. Both papers are worth 50% of the AS qualification and cover the contents of sections 1-3 and relevant practical skills.

In A-level Chemistry the assessment consists of three written exams at the end of Y13. Weighting is as follows: Papers 1 – 35%, paper 2 – 35%, paper 3 – 30%

AS and A-level chemistry courses will be taught in tandem in Year 12.

Practical skills will be based on practical activities taught throughout the A2 course and students will be also awarded a practical accreditation based on their completion of 12 practical activities over the two years covering 5 competencies.

Future opportunities

A Level Chemistry is essential for those students wishing to pursue a career in Medicine, Pharmacy, Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Medicine. Due to its development of practical and problem solving skills it is also considered a desirable A Level to have for many other university courses. Students will learn the importance of Chemistry, how it is used as well as what a Chemist does.
