BTEC Sport at South Wolverhampton and Bilston Academy

Course description

This level 3 course builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills established in the Level 2 BTEC Sport or GCSE Physical Education. It gives exciting opportunities to be involved in a number of different physical activities, promoting an active and healthy lifestyle and giving true vocational experience of Physical Education and Sport. Units can include fitness testing and programming, assessing risk in sport, practical team/individual sport, physiology of fitness, anatomy and physiology for sport, nutrition, sports development, sports coaching and psychology for sport. Units are planned and delivered to the group’s strengths by fully qualified and experienced Physical Education and Sport staff.

Course content

Unit 1- The Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport

Unit 2- The Physiology of Fitness

Unit 3- Assessing Risk in Sport – core unit

Unit 4- Fitness Training and Programming

Unit 7- Fitness Testing for Sport – mandatory specialist unit

Unit 9- Practical Sport

Unit 14- Exercise, Health and Lifestyle

Unit 15- Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise

Entry requirements

Minimum Level 2 Merit (BTEC) or ‘C’ at GCSE PE


Students can study diploma or sub-diploma over 12 or 7 units respectively. The units are assessed following specific criteria for each different module of work. Work will be set and assessed in the form of assignments, reports, presentations, observations of others and practical work in a sporting context. This work will be mainly classroom based with support from staff, but independent learning is required as is extensive out of school hours learning. Students will receive pass, merit, distinction or distinction star based on their work with support from the new BTEC assessment framework.
