Gym Instruction Active IQ level 2 at St Peter's RC High School & Sixth Form Centre

Course description

The aim of this qualification is to train learners to a professionally competent level, enabling them to prescribe, plan and deliver safe and effective exercise programmes within a gym or health club environment.

Course content

You will learn about:

  • anatomy and physiology for exercise;
  • nutrition;
  • health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment,
  • principles of exercise fitness and health;
  • preparing for gym based exercise;
  • instructing gym based exercise;
  • learning to support clients in taking part in gym based exercise.

Entry requirements

4 level 3 / D grades at GCSE including English Language and maths.

Some experience of gym-based exercises, including free weights, is highly recommended. The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential; therefore, a degree of physical fitness is necessary.

There is also an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved and learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at level 2.

Assessment

You will be assessed through an on-going portfolio, two multiple choice examinations and through a practical assessment.

Future opportunities

This is a one year course provided through Active IQ and is designed to provide progression to Level 3 qualifications in Personal Training for learners who wish to further their knowledge and skills and become personal trainers.

You will also improve your GCSE English and mathematics.

The Elite Performance Pathway which the school offers to gifted and talented students is a long term athlete development programme designed to help students achieve their athletic potential and enhance their chances of success in their chosen sport.

The EPP programme incorporates strength and conditioning sessions built using the latest research in youth physical development to put students on the pathway to building elite levels of strength, power, speed, agility and cardiovascular fitness.

We currently support athletes across a wide range of sports including rugby, football, hockey, netball, tennis, athletics, martial arts and gymnastics with a number of athletes now having made the progression on to high performance sport and scholarships.
