Course description

What does the course involve?

You will have the chance to take on the roles of ‘performer’, ‘leader’ or ‘official’ in your chosen sport at AS, before focusing on one of these roles at A2. In the context of your chosen role(s), you will review your current participation in physical activity; identify opportunities locally, nationally and internationally allowing you to advance your participation in physical activity by creating a development and a life plan. In addition, you will learn about sport, from the grass roots to the elite level, and the development of competitive sport. Healthy lifestyles, fitness and training, and preparation for sports performance are also covered extensively. What course units will I take? Weighting: 50% coursework, 50% examination

AS Level Units

Unit 1A - Participation in Sport and Recreation. (Active Leisure & Recreation, Effects of Exercise, Healthy Lifestyles, Fitness and Training) Unit 1B – Opportunities and Pathways. (examination 2 hours) (Development of Competitive Sport, Performance Pathways and Lifelong Involvement)

Unit 2 – The Critical Sports Performer (coursework) (Local and National study, Personal Performance, Performance Analysis),

A Level Units

Unit 3 - Preparation for optimum sports performance (exam – 2 hours) (Physiological and Psychological long & short term preparation, Opportunities and Pathways, Managing Elite Performance)

Unit 4 - The Developing Sports Performer (coursework) (Development Plan, International study, Progressive Participation, and Lifeplan)

Further information

A – C grades in GCSE in Maths, English and Science are normally required. You will need to be interested in all aspects of Physical Education and Sport. Previous and current experience as a sports performer, leader or official would be advantageous.
