Mathematics A-Level at Coppice Performing Arts School

Course description

This course consists of three modules of work for AS and a further three modules to complete the A level. The specification followed is administered by AQA. Students will study Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Decision as part of their course with the emphasis on Algebra,Trigonometry and Calculus.

In general, the first year (Year 12) covers the three modules for the AS part of the course with the second year (Year 13) consisting of the remaining three modules. Further information on this is available from the Curriculum Area Leader.

In Year 12, students will cover Pure Mathematics and Decision. Whilst continuing with their studies in Pure Mathematics, in Year 13 they will also study Statistics. Each module has an examination which is worth one third of the AS level or one sixth of the A level.

In order to participate fully in the course, students will need the use of a graphic calculator. These may be purchased from the Mathematics department and students should seek advice from the department on model suitability before purchase if they wish to buy one elsewhere. “Mathematics is highly valued as an A Level choice and it has been found that employees with A level Mathematics tend to be paid 10% more than similar employees!” Study done by the LSE Centre for Economic Performance.

Course details & assessment:

Each unit has an exam of 1 hour 30 minutes worth a sixth of the full award. The overall grade is decided by the total mark of all modules.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement for Level 3 study is 5 GCSEs A*-C including English and Mathematics; these should be in at least 4 different subjects. You will receive guidance about which pathway will be most suited to your needs which will be based on your anticipated GCSE Point Score. If you have a higher Point Score you will be encouraged to take a more academic route and if your Point Score is lower you may wish to choose a more vocational pathway. However, these options will be discussed in your admission interview. 

Specific entry requirements:

Students need to have gained at least a grade B at GCSE, and should be confident at Algebra and Trigonometry.

Students also need to have gained a total of at least 5 GCSE A* - B grades.

This is a demanding course and students should be aware that they need to be fully committed to hard work as homework can take four or five hours a week. However, it has its own rewards in knowing that you have succeeded in such a demanding subject.

Our excellent Progression Guidance, together with personalised programmes of support, resulted in all students in 2015 gaining their first choice university place. For 3 consecutive years our students have achieved exceptionally well, with pass rates above National Average.

      Our Sixth Form students are seen as role models for younger members of the school and, as such, are full participants in the life of the school and support our vertical tutoring house system. A Head Boy and Head Girl are selected to play a lead part in supporting staff, students and the school as a whole.
