Course description

How long will you live? How should you write down numbers? Who’s your ideal partner? How good is our voting system? And what is a differential equation? These are difficult and momentous questions. Further Mathematics has some answers, along with many questions and answers about our lives and how we live.

Further Mathematics aims to introduce students to the beauty and the practical applications of mathematics and if you enjoy maths you might well benefit from taking Further Maths at A level. In this way you will spend more time doing what you enjoy!

Entry requirements

5+ A*– C with English Language plus A* in Maths on the Higher Paper (A only permitted with the agreement of the Maths Department).

Assessment

Further Maths is assessed by six modular exams and a graphics calculator may be used. Both scientific and graphic calculators may be bought through the school. Students will be issued with a syllabus for each module and there is a list of formulae that you will be expected to know for the exam. There are no formula sheets but you will be given formulae booklets for each exam.

Future opportunities

For those intending to continue on to university, there are very few degree subjects for which a Further Maths A Level would not be useful. If you intend to study Mathematics, Engineering or Computer Science at University, some courses require Further Mathematics as a prerequisite. In addition, many Economics or Engineering courses also prefer students who have studied Further Maths at school.
