AQA Systems and Control Technology
This course is ideal for anyone who has studied Electronic Products or Resistant Materials at GCSE.
Y12 and Y13 both consist of a practical element and an end of year examination.
The specific areas of study include; electronic systems, mechanical systems, resistant materials, CAD/CAM, design in practice, sustainability, industrial practices, pneumatic systems, microprocessors, programmable control and other areas.
In Y12, the coursework usually consists of a number of small projects that demonstrate the students understanding of the areas covered, whereas in Y13, the coursework is a single, substantial designing and making activity.
Grade B in Graphic Products, Resistant Materials, Electronic Products or another suitable Technology course. Candidates must be able to work independently and with commitment to the course and should enjoy problem solving, designing and making. ICT skills are necessary to enable students to fully access the CAD/CAM equipment available to them. High level analytical skills are an essential part of the course as is the ability to meet deadlines. An interest in and understanding of world issues such as the environment, recycling etc. is also very helpful.
Lessons take place in the Technology Block and will be either a taught theory lesson towards the written exams or a guided study lesson where students work on their design projects.
For the first few months, most lessons will be spent on the project work and after February half term most lessons will be theory based. Homework is an essential part of the course for any student hoping to achieve a good grade.

Design and Technology is a versatile subject, gaining in popularity and promoted in government policies. It is particularly useful for those intending to pursue further education courses in Engineering, Applied Sciences, Product Design, Architecture, Art and Design, Computing etc.
