BTEC Hospitality and Catering at Hasmonean High School

Course description

This exciting vocational course is aimed at students who have an interest in food and cooking and who wish to pursue a career in the hospitality industry. This course has a strong practical element which allows students to develop their cookery skills in the preparation, cooking and finishing of a wide range of products, for example, fresh pasta dishes and complex desserts. The students will have the opportunity to build links with industry and will be encouraged to attend a work experience placement to further enhance the vocational nature of this qualification.

  •  A respect for hygiene and safety when working with food
  •  A passion for cookery

Assessment

The BTEC uses a variety of assessment methods. There are 3 core units which require students to study:

  •  Development of Working Relationships in Hospitality
  •  Health, Safety and Security in the Hospitality Working Environment
  •  Food Safety in Catering

There are an additional 6 units of study which assess students’ practical skills with a range of food products. Each unit will be assessed with a combination of a multiple choice test (completed online) and a portfolio of evidence of skills learnt and developed. There are a total of 6 tests over the 2 years, with a duration of 45 – 75 minutes.
