A Level Computing at The John of Gaunt School

Course description

This course deals with the workings of computers, such as problem solving and programming in a high level language, number and coding systems, hardware and components, networking and the internet, programming paradigms, database design and communication networking.

Course content

Unit 1 and 2
In the first year of the course you will learn lots of advanced programming methods that will enable you to create software in the second year. You will also learn all about computer systems and how they are used in real world situations.

Unit 3 and 4
In the second year you create a computer project of your choice. Previous students have created websites, mobile phone apps, game add-ons, Kinect games and many others. You will also learn a lot of information about how computers are used and how they can be developed for an ever changing technological world.

Entry requirements

You will need 5 A*-C GCSEs to enter the Sixth Form. No specific ICT qualification is required to gain entry to this course.

 

Assessment

OCR AS Level – H047 OCR A Level – H447

This is through a combination of coursework and examinations.

Future opportunities

The whole course is based on studying and applying the use of Computing in the workplace so it is difficult to think of any career in which a study of the use of computers at this level would not be advantageous.

Computing A Level provides a good basis for further study or a career in the IT industry.
