Mathematics AS Level at West Kirby Grammar School
WHY CHOOSE MATHEMATICS?
Mathematics provides you with skills that you can use in any career: analytical thinking, solving problems, thinking creatively, investigating and presenting logically, handling and interpreting data, forming and communicating ideas. Mathematics is a highly credible qualification, however, the choice should also be because you enjoy mathematics and you get pleasure from the challenge of solving number and logic puzzles.

WHAT CAN I DO WITH MATHEMATICS?
Students today are growing up in an atmosphere of increasing acceptance of equal opportunities and an extended study of Mathematics opens the door to a variety of careers: architect, chemist, food scientist, air traffic controller, racing car designer, computer programmer, defence analyst, investment banker, weather forecaster, medical statistician, project manager, economist, actuary.... the list is endless. 'We face the challenge of preparing young people for jobs that do not exist, problems we have yet to discover and use technologies yet to be invented...challenge to develop skills and competencies needed in a fast changing world!'.
WHAT DO I NEED TO START THE COURSE?
Students ideally will have achieved an A* or A grade to start the course. Students who have achieved a grade B may find some of the aspects of the course difficult but can gain success at A level if they are prepared to work hard and show determination. Mathematics A level requires constant focussed hard work but the rewards are great.
