Service and Maintenance at Mid Cheshire College

Course description

You will learn through a variety of activities but the emphasis will be on the practical application of skills and knowledge.
• gain a broad understanding of the Engineering and motor vehicle industry and be able to study selected areas in more depth
• learn how craft activities are carried out safely and how they contribute to the Engineering process, namely: -
1 Electrical Installation
2 Motor Vehicle Engineering
3 Manufacturing Engineering
4 Have an opportunity to apply learning in a practical and realistic way
5 Follow a programme of study that enables progression to both Intermediate level qualifications and employment in Engineering
6 Gain confidence by developing independent learning skills
7 Be given the opportunity to sample hands on work-experience during the foundation year

Students are required to arrange a suitable work placement as part of their assessment.

Course content

This course includes a Study Programme to provide learners with a coherent and enriching curriculum which will provide them with the academic, social and employability skills to progress to further or higher education or employment.

The content of the study programme is designed to broaden the learner experience beyond the main qualification of study.

The key theme of Study Programmes at Level 1 will be preparation for the world of work and the development of personal, social and employability skills.

As well as your core qualification you will study GCSE or Functional Skills English and/or maths plus English and maths development as part of the core qualification.

Learners will also undertake personal progress planning and pastoral education. Plus additional personal development activity which may include work experience and projects.

Entry requirements

2 GCSEs at grade E – G or equivalent, or an Entry Level qualification.

Assessment

Assessment is based on assignments with specific practical and job knowledge tasks where necessary.

Future opportunities

You will be able to progress on to a Level 2 qualification in a more specialised area, such as the BTEC Diploma in Engineering, the Institute of Motor Industry Technical Certificate in Motor Vehicle or Electrical Installation. Alternatively, you may wish to consider employment at a junior level.
