Photography Edexcel BTEC L3 Extended diploma at Preston's College

Course description

Passed and current students of this course have loved the practical nature of the lessons. With a very diverse range of camera and computer skills and techniques taught, you will learn a huge range of skills in the art of visual language. This course is perfect for anyone who enjoys being creative with cameras and technology. This course also looks at the cross over between photography and video. From wedding, sport and fashion photography to digital image editing this course covers all aspects of modern photography.

Course content

During this course you will use a digital SLR and learn how to use it to photograph a wide range of different photographic genres. You will also learn how to edit images using Photoshop and Aperture software. You will have access to excellent facilities and resources including the photographic studio, MAC and PC suites and other specialised photographic equipment. You will also be provided with opportunities to further develop your employability and project work by working on live briefs with other areas of the College, this will include working with fashion, music, drama, dance and many more. Often these images are used by the wider college and our marketing team.

The skills acquired during this course are aimed at helping you to move on to further education or employment. Most lessons are practical and the course is setup so you are given the most opportunity to practice your photographic and editing skills in a relaxed yet professional environment. This helps build your confidence and knowledge for working in the industry.

Entry requirements

You need five GCSEs at A*-C grade. A GCSE at grade C in either English or maths with a minimum grade D for the other subject.

Assessment

Tutor feedback and peer support will form an essential part of this course. There will be ongoing support and guidance from the tutor and other professional people within the industry. Continual assessment is by coursework and is internally assessed and externally verified. You have the opportunity to stay or improve your grades through directed learning sessions.

Future opportunities

– Higher Education: Many students have progressed into higher education on a variety of different courses such as Photography, Advertising, Fashion Promotion and Combined honours degree programmes.

– Apprenticeship: Apprenticeships in Creative Media Production

– Employment: A range of jobs opportunities in related areas. A photography student can progress to a number of different job roles and industries such as a camera operator for films or become a cinematographer.
