Computer Science A Level at Melksham Oak Community School

Course description

In Sixth Form, students are able to choose to study GCE Applied ICT at both AS and A2 level; a course that will open doors to both academic and career based pathways. There is a mixture of electronically submitted coursework and external examinations.
The course is available in both a single and double award format.

Course content

AS Single Award

The units studied in Year 12 are:
Life in the Information Age
Students learn about the technologies that enable the access and exchange of information throughout daily life in a range of contexts. Assessment for this unit is through electronic coursework portfolio.

The Digital Economy

Students investigate how organisations are responding to the pressures of the e-marketplace by using transactional websites to present their products and services, gather information and provide a personalised service. Assessment for this unit is through electronic coursework portfolio.
The Knowledge Worker
Students learn how to problem solve by analysing spread-sheet models and producing solutions to real world ICT problems. This unit is assessed through an examination.

AS Double Award

Additional units studied for the double award are:
Systems Specification, Installation and Configuration
Students investigate computer systems, learning how to gather information from a client and analyse this information to complete a systems specification. Students complete practical tasks including setting up the hardware and software for a given purpose and performing configuration to further tailor the system to the customer's needs. This unit is assessed through an e-portfolio.

Web Design

Students work with a client to design and build a bespoke website to meet the client needs. Students will learn web design skills, alongside project management, analysis, design and testing. This unit is assessed through an e-portfolio.
Technical Support
Students learn how to provide technical support for a variety of end users including upgrading of hardware and software; solving common issues and providing advice and information to small business users. This unit is assessed through an e-portfolio.

A2 Single Award

The units studied in Year 13 are:
Using Multimedia Software
Students learn how to use a range of applications and produce a functioning product based on a client brief. This unit is taught in conjunction with Managing ICT projects and is assessed through the creation of an e-portfolio.
Managing ICT Projects
Students learn how to track their progress through a large project using a range of techniques. This unit is assessed through an e-portfolio.
Using Database Software
Students extend on their existing knowledge of handling data, developing understanding of database design and implementation. This unit is assessed through a practical examination.

A2 Double Award

Additional units studied for the double award are:
Web Development
Students develop their work at AS by hosting and maintaining the website created for their client. This unit is assessed through an e-portfolio.
Programming
Students learn to program using VB.net. Students will also learn about program design and testing. This unit is assessed through an e-portfolio.
Networking
Students learn the fundamentals of networks theory and are assessed through a written examination.
