Design and Technology (Product Design) AS and A Level at Shenley Brook End School

Course description

This course builds on your experience of design and technology at GCSE.  It focuses on product design.  Through it you will have the opportunity to study, propose and realise prototype solutions to designing and making opportunities closely linked to the real world of product manufacture.

Course content

With a qualification in design and technology you could go on to study for a degree in
higher education, or work in the engineering, manufacturing or design industries. 

Other subjects which would go well with design and technology are art, physics or mathematics.

Entry requirements

You should enjoy exploring, working with and manipulating resistant and non-resistant materials.  You should be willing to continue to develop your visual and graphical communication skills and be able to work under pressure as an element of this course is a timed design challenge. Ideally you would have studied design and technology and have achieved success at GCSE level at C or above in either resistant materials or graphic products. You should also be willing to read the texts provided together with other relevant directed reading.


You will be assessed via four units.  The first two consist of an Advanced Innovation Challenge on a theme supplied by the exam board (this is a practical timed design examination that takes place during 7 hours on a set day with a one-hour written paper at a later date) and a product design project in which you design a prototype product.  These lead to an award at AS Level.   

The second two units consist of a major design and manufacturing project.  The design folio and the making and evaluating of the product count as one unit. The final unit is a product design exam.  These units lead to an award at A level.
