A2 Music - Academic Pathway at Furze Platt Senior School

Course description

An Academic Pathway Subject - This course is designed for students who love music, enjoy composing, performing and listening. You will take skills and understanding in all these areas to a much higher level than GCSE.

Although many of our A level music students do go on to study music or music technology at university, it also suits students who want to create a well-balanced set of subjects to study in the sixth form.

 

Course content

Year 1:

Performing: You will develop your skills both as a soloist and consider how to prepare a balanced programme of Music.

Composing: At A level there is a more formal approach to composition which will enable you to create more sophisticated pieces.

Analysis: You will study a range of set works spanning different areas of music such as Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Music for Film, Popular Music and Jazz, Fusions and New Directions. Close study of the scores will give you a technical understanding of the composer’s art. 

Listening: You will develop your ability to identify and discriminate between features of music aurally. This is an important skill for all musicians.

Year 2:

Performing: You will develop your skills further as a soloist working on preparing and performing your chosen recital.

Composing: You will continue to develop your composition skills and produce two compositions. One will be a free choice and one will be to a brief set by the Exam board.

Analysis: You will continue to study the range of set works spanning different areas of music, giving you a technical understanding of the composer’s compositional choices.

Listening: You will continue to develop your ability to identify and discriminate between features of music aurally. This is an important skill for all musicians.

Entry requirements

An average of 5- 'Attainment 8' score (largely equivalent to 4 grade 4s and 4 grade 5s) across 8 highest GCSEs including English & Maths
Grade 5 in GCSE Music and at least a grade 4 in an instrumental or vocal performance. Grade 5 theory is strongly recommended.

Assessment

You will be assessed at the end of Year 2

You will be officially examined in the following ways at A2:

Controlled assessment – Two compositions

Controlled assessment – Performance recital

Formal Exam – Listening and set works essays

 

Future opportunities

This specification provides a sound preparation for the study of music in higher education, as well as providing opportunities to develop strengths and interests leading to music-related and other careers. It encourages students to develop a wide range of transferable skills such as critical thinking, research, communication and team-work.

Music A level, and Music degrees, can lead to a vast range of careers from teachers to performance artists, managers, lawyers, accountants, therapists and media professionals, to name but a few.
