Public Services (BTEC Level 2) at New College Swindon
This is a one-year course which provides a good introduction for students who hope to enter a career in the Uniformed Public Services: (The Uniformed Public Services are the Police, Fire Service, Armed Forces, Ambulance Service, Prison Service, Revenue and Customs and Coastguard).
You will take part in outdoor activities, carry out research projects and study situations that affect the public sector.
The First Diploma is a Level 2 (Intermediate) course, equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grade A* - C.
The course consists of 6 units
- Adventurous Activities and Teamwork
- Public Service skills
- Health & Fitness for Uniformed Public Service
- Volunteering for the Public Services
- Employment in the Uniformed Public Services
- Land navigation by map and compass
- Career Planning for the Public Services
You will have a personal tutor to guide you through the programme.
You should have at least 4 GCSE grade Ds, including English.
You should check the fitness and health requirements for your chosen public service, to make sure that you can meet them.
You should be able to take part in overnight camping expeditions, day walks, water sports and physical fitness sessions.
There are no exams on the First Diploma Course. All units are assessed individually via assignments which will be set throughout the year.
The assessment of all the units will be done internally.
The course provides a route into the Public Services, either directly (for the Armed Services) or by moving on to a BTEC National Diploma (for progression to the other Public Services).
You can progress to the BTEC National Diploma if you achieve a Merit or above on the First Diploma and have an appropriate Level 2 qualification in English.
You will normally combine the course with GCSEs and eXtra courses of your own choice.
