Art & Design AS/A2 at Torpoint Community College

Course description

In Art and Design you will have the opportunity to develop your creativity and your personal style by experimenting and exploring with a wide range of different media, techniques and processes.

You will be following an unendorsed course which means that you can initially investigate a wide spectrum of making and creating Art and Design but which also gives you the opportunity to specialize as you progress through the course and begin to recognize where your strengths and interests lie.

You will have the opportunity to work with the following media and processes - Textiles, Photography and Digital Media, Graphic Communication, Painting, Printmaking, 3D Design and Sculpture, Fashion, Critical and Contextual Studies.

You will visit galleries, local FE and HE Colleges, work with PCA (our Co-operative Partner) and have the chance to experience the world of Art and Design outside the classroom.

The course consists of four Units.

AS comprises of Unit 1&2 – Unit 1 being Coursework Portfolio based on a theme and Unit 2 is the Controlled Assessment which involves a starting point set by the Exam board, an extended period of preparation time and a 5 hour Exam period to produce the Final Piece.

A2 comprises of Unit 3&4 – Unit 3 being a Personal Study, an investigation by the student into any part of Art and Design that they feel passionate about and a written section that supports their visual work. Unit 4 is again a Controlled Assessment but with 15 hours being allocated for the production of the Final piece.

A- Level Art and Design works well with any combination of subjects. It is an important subject if you are looking to venture into the creative industries but can also provide a contrast to traditional academic subjects. Studying Art and Design shows employers and Universities that you have strong visual and creative skills.
