Art and Design A Level at New College Nottingham
If you’re creative, want to improve your artistic practice and enhance your technique in different artistic forms, this course is for you. Art and
design feature in every aspect of our daily lives from the cereal box we grab every morning to the trainers you walk to college in – they’ve all been through an artistic process.
Studying Art and Design at A Level will give you an excellent grounding in drawing, painting, graphics, textiles, fashion, ceramics, sculpture and printing. You’ll also study the history of art, where you’ll discover more about the context of art through the ages and use your knowledge to inspire your own work. The course is a gateway to many exciting careers including graphic design, advertising, product development and roles within arts organisations. It could even be the start of a freelance career as an artist.
This practical course is a great way to learn new techniques and develop ideas. You’ll be encouraged to experiment and develop your own unique style. You’ll study drawing; painting; ceramics; sculpture; screen printing; lino and mono printing; photography; creative textiles; graphics; computer graphics; and art history. You’ll visit art galleries and museums, and undertake projects and workshops with industry partners, artists and the local community.
You’ll need 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C and at least a grade C in Art and Design.
You’ll undertake a combination of examinations and coursework:
AS Level: a coursework portfolio and a controlled assignment (five-hour exam).
A Level: a personal investigation with 3,000 word study and a controlled assignment (15-hour exam).
You could progress to further studies on a foundation diploma in art and design, or a higher education course in fine art, graphic design, textile design or 3D design. There are lots of careers open to you such as fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, interior designer or textile designer.
