Work-Based Horticulture (Apprenticeship) at Solihull College & University Centre

Course description

Our Level 3 Horticulture Apprenticeship leads on from the Level 2 qualification and it requires you to demonstrate competence in your work area, therefore you need to be in full time employment to take the course.

It is also ideal for those working in a supervisory capacity and wish to gain a qualification

Course content

The different routes available within this apprenticeship are:

- Production Horticulture,
- Landscaping,
- Sports Turf - Greenkeeper,
- Sports Turf - Groundsman and Parks,
- Gardens and Green Space.

Entry requirements

Minimum qualifications for this course are:

- GCSE grades G and above,
- Level 2 Work Based Diploma in Amenity Horticulture (or equivalent),
- A successful interview.


The programme will be assessed within your work place via observation. You will also be assessed through coursework, written papers, oral questions, witness statements from your employer/supervisor and you will need personal home study time.

Future opportunities

Employment prospects after Level 3 should continue to improve with opportunities to gain employment in Landscaping, Nursery stock, Garden Centres, Golf Courses and Local Authority.

Further information

You will undertake an independent assessment in form of a short answer assessment to cover underpinning knowledge.

Good levels of English and Maths are important for your success in your course, your chosen vocation and life. Throughout your course you will continue to develop your English and Maths skills in your vocational classes.

If you haven't achieved an A*-C grade in English or Maths at GCSE, or a Level 2 Functional Skill, you will also be working towards a qualification in English or Maths at a level that will enable you to progress towards these grades.
