Introductory Diploma in Sport VTCT at Hillview School for Girls

Course description

The introductory Diploma in Sports Studies allows students to study a range of modules relating to the wide scope of topics that make up the study fo Sport, including physiology, business, health and practical performance.

Course content

Students will study six unts in total.  There are four mandatory units:

Anatomy and physiology for sport - this will include the study of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory and energy systems.

Lifestyle factors - this will inclue the study of how lifestyle factors such as smoking and alcohol intake can affect health and wellbeing.  Students well learn to analyse individuals' lifestyle factors and advise them on how to improve.

Risk assessment in sport - this will include learning how to carry out sport specific risk assessments to maintain the safety of participants and colleagues in a workplace and how to plan safe sporting activities.

Sports Leadership - students will learn how to plan, lead and mange sporting activities.  Through practical experience students will learn the importance of psychological factors when leadign sports activities.

An additional two units will be studied which will be selected according to the strengths of the student cohort.  These are usually practical based units which allow students the opportunity to take part in a variety of individual sports as well as outdoor and adventurous activities*. 

Entry requirements

General entry requirements to study three Level 3 qualifications for Hillview Sixth Form are Grade 4 in both English and Maths together with 3 other GCSE grades at Grade 4 or above (A*-C).

Any student meeting the Sixth Form entrance criteria is eligible for this course


The course is assessed through a combination of externally assessed exams and internally assessed wrritten and pratical coursework.

Future opportunities

Students can progress onto a range of further qualifications such as BTEC Level 4 diplomas in Spor or Sport and Excercise Science and undergraduate or foundation degrees in Sport Studies, Sport and Exercise Science, Sport Coaching, Outdoor Studies and Sport Business Studies.
