Course description

Aim of the course

  • A course delivered in practical and academic manner
  • Developing skills in performance, composition, listening and analysis
  • It is for students who have an open mind and want to discover different types of music, and who are committed to learning a musical instrument or sing
  • It is also for students who are very committed to a range of extra-curricular activities including singing

Course content

AS Music A varied course which examines appraising, performance, and composition skills. This specification (AQA) provides a sound preparation for the study of music at higher education level.

  • Component 03 – Composition

A2 Music A level Music builds on the knowledge and skills gained from AS as well as musical experience gained from extra curricular activities.

  • Component 3 - Composition

Entry requirements

A or B grade at GCSE Music; or Proven musical experience to an equivalent standard of A/B grades at GCSE (Grade 5 Theory is preferable in this situation). Minimum Grade 4 or equivalent on a musical instrument/singing. Some keyboard skills are necessary.

Assessment

AS

Component 01: Appraising Music 30% externally assessed exam covering Listening, Analysis, and Contextual understanding.

Component 02: Performance 30% Coursework externally assessed Music performance. Solo and/or ensemble performing as an instrumentalist and/or vocalist and/or music production. A minimum of six minutes of performance in total is required (no more than eight minutes).

Component 03: Composition 30% - externally marked Two compositions - Composition 1 to a brief, Composition 2 – free composition. A minimum of four and a half minutes of music in total is required (no more than six minutes).

A2

Component 1: Appraising Music - 40% of A Level externally marked examination assessing Listening, Analysis and Contextual understanding.

Component 2: Performance – 35% of A Level – externally marked Music performance Solo and/or ensemble performing as an instrumentalist and/or vocalist and/or music production. A minimum of ten minutes of performance in total is required (no more than twelve minutes).

Component 3: Composition – 25% of A Level externally marked Two compositions - Composition 1 to a brief, Composition 2, free composition. A minimum of four and a half minutes of music in total is required (no more than six minutes).

Future opportunities

An A2 would provide students with full preparation for any Music or Music-related degree course, or entry to Music College. It is highly regarded and fully recognised by all Universities for entry requirements. There are many careers which this can lead to including perform.
