Design and Technology (Product Design) A level at St Robert of Newminster Roman Catholic School

Course description

If you have a desire to become an innovative product and graphic designer, then this is the course for you. This course provides you with the skills, knowledge and experience required to be able to design and manufacture products to meet the needs of the 21st century user. This course provides you with the skills, knowledge and experience to follow a future pathway in Graphic, Interior, Automotive, Industrial or Product Design. Many of the learned skills are also transferable into the fields of Architecture and Engineering.

 

Course content

The course focuses on the materials and processes used within the Graphics Industry, however opportunities are provided for students to learn about the design and manufacture of buildings, industrial products and vehicles.

* Unit 1Portfolio of Creative Skills (25%)

* Unit 2D&T in Practice‐exam (25%)

* Unit 3Designing for the future‐exam (25%)

* Unit 4Commercial Design (25%)

 

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 Grade A*-C at GCSE level or equivalent preferably including a D&T subject or Art.

Further information

In the first year, students are provided with the opportunity to develop their creative, technical and practical skills through the production of a Product Design portfolio, which consists of Investigations, Design Tasks and Manufacturing Projects. They also study design theory, looking at materials and processes used in the Graphics Industries.
