Course description

AS Level

Unit 1: Listening, Reading and Writing (70% of AS, 35% of total A-Level)

For both Unit 1 and Unit 2, students cover 4 general topic areas:

  • Media
  • Popular Culture
  • Healthy lifestyles
  • Family/relationships

This unit requires students to:

  • Listen to a range of authentic recorded resources and answer questions
  • Read authentic material and retrieve and convey information by responding to a range of questions
  • Write 200-220 words in the form of a well-structured essay based on a short printed Spanish language stimulus.

Unit 2: Speaking Test (30% of AS, 15% of A-Level)

This unit rewards students for their ability to converse in Spanish on two general topic areas that they have chosen in advance. Duration: 35 minutes (including 20 minutes preparation).

Part 1: Discussion of a stimulus card (5 minutes)

Candidates have 20 minutes supervised preparation time during which they should prepare one of two cards given to them by the examiner. The cards will be based on the four topics prescribed for AS, ie Media, Popular Culture, Healthy Living/ Lifestyle and Family/Relationships.

Part 2: Conversation (10 minutes)

The Conversation will cover three of the four AS topics. The first topic in the conversation will be nominated by the candidate and can be any topic of his/her choice (3 minutes maximum) from the four AS topic areas. The remaining two topics in the conversation will be chosen by the examiner, avoiding any overlap.

A2 Level

Unit 3: Listening, Reading and Writing (35% of A-Level)

For A2, candidates must study two of the five Cultural Topics listed, together with the remaining three topics, i.e. Environment, the Multicultural Society and Contemporary Social Issues:

Cultural Topics

  • A target language-speaking region/community
  • A period of 20th century history from a target language-speaking country/community
  • An author from a target language-speaking country/community
  • A dramatist or poet from a target language-speaking country/community
  • A director, architect, musician or painter from a target language-speaking country/community

Unit 4: Speaking Test (15% of A-Level)

This unit requires students to demonstrate the effectiveness of their Spanish-language skills by presenting and taking a clear stance on any issue of their choice. They will be expected to use the language of debate and argument to discuss the issue and will also be assessed for understanding as well as communication and quality of spoken language.

Part 1 Discussion of a stimulus card (5 minutes)

Candidates have 20 minutes supervised preparation time during which they should prepare one of two cards given to them by the examiner. The two cards will cover two separate topics based on three of the topics prescribed for A2, ie. Environment, the Multicultural Society and Contemporary Social Issues. Candidates are expected to choose one of the two points of view expressed on their chosen card, present this point of view for no more than one minute and then defend or justify it.

Part 2 Conversation (10 minutes)

The Conversation will cover both Cultural Topics studied by the candidate. Approximately 5 minutes should be spent discussing each Cultural Topic.
