Heating and Ventilation: Commercial Installations Advanced Apprenticeship at Croydon College
This hands-on Apprenticeship programme will equip you with skills in pipe fitting and welding. Welding gives you a chance to move into the potentially lucrative oil and gas industry once you have built on the skills learnt at the College
This Apprenticeship is ideal if you already have experience as a heating engineer and enjoy problem solving.
Topics covered include:
- Understanding and carrying out electrical work on industrial and commercial heating and ventilation systems
- Installing commercial heating and ventilation systems
- Performing industrial and commercial manual metal arc pipe jointing techniques
This course is taught in a block release style with apprentices gaining theoretical and practical experience in the College for two consecutive weeks, four times a year.
You will use industry standard facilities including two state of the art workshops, one for pipe work and the other for welding. Both workshops boast the latest tools and equipment.
Good English and maths skills are essential for success in studying and for future employment prospects and so Croydon College ensures that these skills are developed in all learning opportunities.
It’s also important to have good English and maths qualifications and so all students will study English and maths and work towards an appropriate level and type of qualification including GCSE.
This Advanced Apprenticeship in Heating and Ventilation will give you the chance to learn new skills and gain a top level qualification, while continuing to earn a living.

You will be taught by staff who have solid experience as pipe fitters or welders working for small independent companies and multi-nationals.
On completion of the course you’ll receive a City & Guilds Apprenticeship, which is widely recognised both nationally and internationally.

Great earning potential - research shows that apprentices earn, on average, over £100,000 more throughout their career than other employees (NAS, 2013).
Work ready - a Department for Business, Innovation and Skills survey showed that qualified apprentices score 4% higher on employability than university graduates (ICM Survey, 2013).
A minimum of 4 GCSEs grade C or higher, one being English or maths or a related Level 2 vocational course at Merit or higher (if a Pass grade is achieved GCSE grades and/or functional skills results can also be considered).
English and maths assessed at Level 1 or above.
Practical assessments are undertaken in the College and in the workplace. You assessors visit you at your workplace for the practical assessments. In this environment assessors observe the way apprentices work, be it in a workshop or on a construction site.
Current apprentices are working for multinationals on big projects such as Battersea Power Station. Former students have gone on to management and supervisory positions in the industry, started their own businesses or work abroad. Some have even gone on to become college lecturers!
