Music Technology A Level at Hayesfield Girls' School and Mixed Sixth Form

Course description

Why study this subject at Hayesfield?

This course is suitable for anyone who has a keen interest in creating and recording music, and those who wish to broaden their experience and deepen their understanding of popular music styles and developments in music technology.

The course caters for a wide range of musical interests. All coursework tasks allow an element of choice, and the opportunity for students to apply their own style and musical ideas in creating and manipulating musical material.

Students are expected to have an understanding of relevant musical theory and terminology.

 

Course content

Recording: Produce an audio recording of a song chosen from a list of 10 choices - 20%.

Composition: Produce a technology based composition from a brief - 20%.

Listening and Analysis: Study of recording and principles of sound - 25%. Producing and Analysing: Editing and mixing of audio and midi - 35%.

Entry requirements

Minimum Grade 4 in Music and Science. The ability to play an instrument or sing at above Grade 5 level is strongly recommended. 

Assessment

Recording and Composition are externally marked. Listening is assessed through a listening and written exam.

Producing is assessed through a practical and written exam.

Future opportunities

GCE Music Technology has been widely accepted by higher education providers. Study in Music Technology could lead to careers in the record industry, sound engineering, record producing, and music education.

This subject works well with

Maths and Sciences, Performing Arts CTEC, Theatre Studies or in combination with any other A Level.

 

Extra/Super curricular activities

In addition to the choirs, orchestra and wind band that are available to all students, Music Technology students have the opportunity to work as part of the crew for concerts and shows.
