Health and Social Care Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeship Level 2 at Exeter College

Course description

This Apprenticeship offers a practical approach for anyone wishing to work in the health and social care sector. It consists of the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care which is a part knowledge based and part competency based qualification.

You could progress onto the Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3).

On your college day-release, you will be taught by your Tutor or Training Officer. You will spend the remainder of the week in the workplace where you will put your new skills into practice. Whilst at work, your Training Officer will visit you and carry out and help you build your portfolio of evidence for your NVQ.

Course content

You will cover the following units:

  • Communicate with and complete records for individuals
  • Support the health and safety of yourself and individuals
  • Develop your knowledge and practice
  • Ensure your own actions support the care protection and well-being of individuals

You will be able to choose two optional units in addition to the compulsory ones above. You will be given the opportunity to complete a First Aid Qualification, a Basic Food Hygiene Certificate, training in Manual Handling, Health and Safety, and Nutrition and Healthy Eating.

Entry requirements

You need GCSEs at Grade D or above (including Maths and English). You need patience, understanding and have good communication skills with a strong desire to work with people. You must be employed in a health and social care setting and will be required to complete a Criminal Records Bureau check for your employer.

Financial information

You may incur some costs for example textbooks required for the course. However you may find your employer has suitable texts, or that you can borrow them from the college library.

Future opportunities

This course will launch you directly into the workplace and provides an excellent way to qualify as a Care Assistant in line with the National Minimum Care Standards, to build your career and progress to further training and education. You could also progress to the Advanced Apprenticeship.
