Core Mathematics at Valley Park School

Course description

The course is for those students who enjoyed Mathematics at GCSE level but chose not to continue mathematics to A level standard. The course supplements other subjects at AS and A level, and prepares you for a career at university where mathematics will be needed in social and physical sciences. The course is aimed at building a broader base of mathematical understanding and skills in order to support mathematical content in other level 3 qualifications (e.g. GCSE A level Biology, Business Studies, Economics, Computing, Geography, Psychology, BTEC Applied Science, Business, Health and Social Care, IT) The course is also reconised by various higher education institutions as developing students’cognitive, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. The content looks at applying mathematics to real life situations such as understanding financial investment and analysing trends. Content is split into 4 key areas which compliment other Level 3 qualifications: • Statistics • Probability • Linear Programming • Sequences and Growth

Entry requirements

You will need a Grade 5 at GCSE Mathematics to be able to study Core Mathematics


Two papers - 7MC0/01 and 7MC0/02 each 100 minutes long 7MC0/01 Comprehension is worth 60 marks 7MC0/02 Application is worth 80 marks Both are calculator papers There is no coursework or controlled assessment. Assessments are awarded at grades A to G
