Chemistry AS/A-Level at Greig City Academy

Course description

This is:

  • a subject which links well with other A-levels such as Physics, Biology Mathematics, Business studies and Social sciences
  • As a means of progressing on to further study at university. An A level in chemistry is an entry requirement for many science and technology courses. Potential medical students must study chemistry as one of their A-level subjects.
  • As a step towards a possible career in veterinary science, pharmacy, dentistry, biochemistry, food science, nursing, chemical engineering and forensic science.
  • As preparation for many non-scientific careers. Employers are increasingly appreciative of the general skills, such as problem solving, logical thought, numeracy and practical skills, which the study of Chemistry at this level develops.

The department believes that each group benefits greatly from being taught by two members of staff. This comes from the belief that not all students learn in the same fashion. Joint teaching provides an effective way by which a variety of teaching styles can be employed. This allows the student to form productive relationships with more than one member of staff and alternative roots to problem solving. Students are positively encouraged to seek support and guidance over problems associated with course content. Consequently, we expect all students taking the exam in 2006 to pass with very respectable grades.

Course content

The department offers both AS and A-level courses in Chemistry. If you plan to follow a science or medically related degree course at university, Chemistry is viewed as probably the most desirable science at this level and places students at considerable advantage when applying for any science related course at university.

If you plan to take Biology at A or AS-level, Chemistry is a complementary subject which will help to reinforce many similar skills and concepts. This established and popular course adopts a traditional approach to Chemistry. Students tend to opt for this course along with OCR Biology.

Entry requirements

Students will normally require a minimum of 260 points. Applicants will ideally have a GCSE or equivalent Grade B in the chosen subjects plus C+ grades in English and Mathematics.

Future opportunities

Further study at University and on into all branches of science, medicine and industry
