Psychology OCR AS at Longdean School

Course description


 •To develop your ideas, skills and knowledge studied at GCSE Psychology if applicable

•To develop research skills and study Psychological issues and impacts

•To develop your awareness of the interaction between people and to analyse their behaviour

 •To provide you with a relevant, topical and stimulating area of study

•To develop your general skills of description, analysis, interpretation and explanation.


You will study two topics in your AS year, these are Psychological Investigations and The Core Studies.

Psychological Investigations covers:

  • Designing Experiments using self-report, observations and correlations
  • Evaluating and improving scientific research

The Core Studies covers:

  • Developmental Psychology
  • Physiological Psychology
  • Social Psychology
  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Individual Differences

Entry requirements

At least a grade B in GCSE English, Maths and, if taken Psychology, with at least 5 A*-C grades altogether.


There is no coursework for Psychology. There are two exams in the first year; these are Psychological Investigations and The Core Studies. Psychological Investigations is one hour long and is worth 30% of the AS overall grade and focuses on developing the ability to design and evaluate research methods in Psychology. The Core Studies exam is two hours long and is a depth study of 15 principal Psychological Studies and is worth 70% of the total AS grade. These cover a number of essential questions like ‘why are we obedient’?

Further information

Psychology is a well-respected As and A Level and demonstrates to future universities that students are able to use a range of skills such as gathering and analysing data, designing scientific research and debating psychological issues. It is a very versatile degree and offers students a range of avenues to explore at higher levels. The study of Psychology might lead on to a career as a Sports Psychologist, an Educational Psychologist or a therapist.
