English Literature AS level at Edmonton County School

Course description

The course will broaden your knowledge and understanding of both modern and traditional literature, and aims to encourage you to read as widely as possible. You will study novels, plays and poems and analyse them in depth. English Literature is a facilitating subject and is highly valued by universities irrespective of your chosen area of study.

Course content

At AS you will study ‘Love through the Ages.’ You will read one Shakespeare play and an anthology of love poetry. You will also study two prose fiction texts and a variety of unseen prose texts. 

Entry requirements

At least a B grade in either English or English Literature.

Assessment

At AS, you will sit two exams, each lasting for 1 hour 30 minutes. The first exam focuses on Shakespeare and poetry and is worth 50% of the AS level. The second exam focuses on prose extracts and is also worth 50% of the AS level.

Future opportunities

English Literature will allow further progression in any area which requires analytical skills or the ability to communicate with detail and precision
