Course description

AS German

Terms 1 and 2                                                                 

Aspects of German-speaking society

We will look at the changing nature of the family; the digital world; youth culture: fashion and trends, music, television.  There will be a focus on grammar and a selection of films and songs.

Terms 3 and 4
 
Artistic culture in the German-speaking world
 
We will focus on festivals and traditions; art and architecture and the cultural life in Berlin, past and present. Once again, there will be a focus on grammar and a selection of films and songs.
 
Terms 5 and 6

Exam focus and topic review. 

Exam

There are three exams at AS Level: a speaking exam (30% )(conducted by your teacher), a listening/reading/writing exam (40%) with a translation passage into English; a written exam (30%), which includes an essay (250 words minimum) based on a text or film you have studied and a translation into German.

Terms 1 and 2

Multiculturalism in Germany

We will look at immigration, integration and racism in German-speaking countries. There will be a focus on grammar and a selection of film, songs and texts.

Terms 3 and 4

Aspects of political life in the German-speaking world

We will study the rights of teenagers, the right to vote and political commitment; demonstrations, and strikes.  We will also cover politics and immigration.  There will be a focus on grammar and a selection of film, songs and texts.

Terms 5 and 6

Exam focus and topic review. 

Exam

There are three exams at A Level: a speaking exam (15%) (conducted by your teacher) and involves a discussion based on a stimulus card and general conversation based on the topics covered. The listening/reading/writing exam (35%) includes two 100-word translations; a writing exam based on a text or film you have studied with a minimum 300-word essay.

 

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades A* - C including English and/or maths and grade B in GCSE German.
