A Level Computer Science at Wootton Upper School and Arts College
- Developing problem-solving ability in a Computer Science context using an algorithmic approach.
- Demonstrating knowledge and experience of programming using primarily Python to solve problems.
- Developing understanding of hardware and software aspects of Computer Science. Gaining an understanding of Computer Architecture including processors, memory and the workings of a CPU.
Have you ever wondered how the web works? Or how anybody can start to develop something as complex as a new computer game? Computer Science is an exciting and challenging subject in which you will develop valuable skills in problem-solving as well as learning how computers work. The content of the course changes constantly to reflect the rapid pace of development in the field. Many of our students go on to higher education courses in Computer Science but you will gain skills and knowledge which will prove useful in a wide range of other courses and careers, particularly in maths, science and engineering.
A level Computer Science is not about acquiring ICT skills: you will not be taught how to use a word processor or spreadsheet. Instead, the emphasis is firmly on problem solving and programming. You will work to analyse problems, design algorithms and write programs. There will be an opportunity to program using Python or Java to solve a range of problems.
Students can progress to degree courses in Higher Education and other programmes which are related to computer science or other computer-related disciplines. This course develops an understanding of computer science, preparing you for a career in software engineering and development or programming.
