Introduction to Professional Cookery Diploma - Level 1 at Crawley College

Course description

You’ll gain a range of skills in catering, from the creation and presentation of dishes, to service in a restaurant. Learning from our experienced catering tutors, you’ll poach, steam, roast and bake your way towards a career as a chef.

This course has a combination of practical assessments which are carried out in our training kitchen,  Le Cordon Vert training restaurant and work related assignments based on realistic scenarios, with tutor guidance from our experienced catering tutors who will help you to learn the skills essential to succeed in the Catering Industry.

During your time on this course you will go on several trips to different hospitality establishments to witness first hand what is to be expected form you and you will have guest speakers coming in speaking to you about their experiences in the professional sector and offering you advice on what awaits you at the end of your learning journey.

All our tutors have years of experience in various roles within catering before going into the teaching. It is the knowledge and skills which they gained during this time that they strive to pass onto their students in their classes.

With our on-site Eat Central Social Space and Le Cordon Vert Training Restaurant, you will have ample opportunity to apply the knowledge you gain in class into practical application.

Every learner at Central Sussex College who is under 19 will undertake a personal Study Programme designed to develop them academically, practically and personally. Study Programmes contain 3 essential elements:

 

  • Subject Course – Vocational or chosen Academic subject, usually studied for 12 – 16 hours a week.
  • English and Maths – Every learner will work towards Level 2 English and Maths (C grade equivalent). Learners who have achieved a Grade C will extend their English and Maths.
  • 3E – Our own brand of specific entrepreneurship, enterprise and employability training.

 

You will have specific time in your timetable for each of the three elements above and you will be expected to attend all elements throughout the year.  Study programmes are designed to help you meet your maximum potential and progress to the next level of study of into work. 

Entry requirements

Do you have a passion for cooking? Do you enjoy creating a variety of dishes both classic and new? If so, this could be the course for you.

The VRQ Level 1 Diploma will give you a variety of skills within catering, from learning how to create variety dishes to presentation skills and even Food and Beverage Service.

You will need a minimum of four GCSEs at grade D, including English and Maths.

Future opportunities

A professional dedicated approach throughout your studies coupled with good attendance and successful completion of all elements of your course will help you progress to the next stage, City & Guilds Level 2 VRQ Diploma in Professional Cookery or an Apprenticeship in Catering.
